As a Tokutei worker, you will interact with Japanese staff at shops and restaurants every day. Using these simple phrases will make your life much easier and more enjoyable.
1. At the Shop / Convenience Store (Konbini)
Ikura desu ka? (いくらですか?)
Meaning: How much is this?
When to use: Use this when you want to know the price of an item.
Kore o onegaishimasu (これをお願いします)
Meaning: This one, please.
When to use: Use this when you are handing an item to the cashier.
Fukuro wa irimasen (袋はいりません)
Meaning: I don't need a bag.
Note: Many shops in Japan now charge for plastic bags.
2. At the Restaurant
Sumimasen! (すみません!)
Meaning: Excuse me!
When to use: Use this to call a waiter to your table.
Gomon-kudasai (注文ください)
Meaning: I'd like to order, please.
O-kaikei o onegaishimasu (お会計をお願いします)
Meaning: The bill, please.
When to use: Use this when you are ready to pay after your meal.
3. Expressing Gratitude
Gochisousama deshita (ごちそうさမှာでした)
Meaning: Thank you for the meal (after eating).
Culture Tip: Saying this shows great respect to the restaurant staff.
