Professional Workplace Greetings

The Power of Aisatsu

  • In Japan, a greeting is more than just a polite word; it is a way to acknowledge others and create a harmonious environment. As a professional worker, using the right greeting at the right time is crucial.

1. Ohayou Gozaimasu

Meaning: Good Morning.

Usage: Use this when you first arrive at work or see your colleagues for the first time in the morning. Even if it's late in the day, it's often used when it's your first time seeing someone in certain industries.

2. Otsukaresama Desu

Meaning: Thank you for your hard work; good job.

Usage: This is the most versatile phrase. Use it when passing a colleague in the hall, when ending a phone call, or as a general greeting during work hours.

3. Shitsurei Itashimasu

Meaning: Excuse me / I am being rude.

Usage: Use this when entering a supervisor’s office, when leaving work before others (Osaki ni shitsurei shimasu), or when interrupting someone’s task.

4. Yoroshiku Onegaishimasu

Meaning: Please treat me well / I look forward to working with you.

Usage: Essential for new introductions, starting a meeting, or when asking someone for a favor. It sets a tone of cooperation.
